Habitat
Subtropical and tropical swamp forest, lowland moist forest, dry forest, dry savanna.

Range (Guide)

Brazil (B).

Scattered localities in central Brazil, from Goi�s to western Minas Gerais and southern Mato Grosso. Possibly also to be found in adjacent areas of Bolivia, where appropriate habitat of species is widespread.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss due to conversion to agriculture, hunting are the main threats.

Probably mostly fruit. During the dry season, flowers.

Voice
Possibly a raven-like cry.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-browed Guan (Penelope jacucaca) and White-crested Guan (Penelope pileata). All three were once considered conspecific.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris) which is smaller with unstreaked wing-coverts and browner belly.
