Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland and shrubland, lowland dry shrubland, temperate grassland. From 1,000 - 4,300 m.
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay (B).

Subspecies
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
- cearensis Naumburg, 1932 - North-eastern Brazil.
- major (von Spix, 1825) - East-central Brazil.
- paludivaga Conover, 1950 - Central Paraguay, north-central Argentina.
- maculosa (Temminck, 1815) - South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina, Uruguay.
- pallida Olrog, 1959 - North-western Argentina.
- annectens Conover, 1950 - Eastern Argentina.
- submontana Conover, 1950 - South-western Argentina.
- nigroguttata Salvadori, 1895 - South-central Argentina.
- chacoensis Conover, 1937 - Chaco of north-western Paraguay. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chaco Nothura (Nothura chacoensis).
