Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 1,500 - 4,000 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Brushland Tinamou (Nothoprocta cinerascens) and Chilean Tinamou (Nothoprocta perdicaria).
Birds of southern coast of Peru may represent a distinct as yet undescribed subspecies.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
- ambigua Cory, 1915 - Southern Ecuador, north-western Peru.
- oustaleti von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1901 - Central and southern Peru.
- niethammeri Koepcke, 1968 - West-central Peru.
- fulvescens von Berlepsch, 1902 - South-eastern Peru.
- pentlandii (Gray, 1867) - Western Bolivia, extreme northern Chile, north-western Argentina.
- doeringi Cabanis, 1878 - Central Argentina.
- mendozae Banks & Bohl, 1968 - West-central Argentina.
- patriciae Hoy, G, 1987 - North-western Argentina (Salta).
