Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest. From 1,300 - 2,900 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
Subspecies traylori may be distinct species.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaneus (Sclater, PL, 1858)   -  East-central Colombia to eastern Ecuador and northern Peru.
  • ochraceiventris (Stolzmann, 1926)   -  Central Peru.
  • traylori Blake, 1961   -  South-eastern Peru.
  • punensis (Chubb, C, 1918)   -  South-eastern Peru, northern Bolivia.
  • cerviniventris (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1873)   -  Northern Venezuela.
  • knoxi Phelps Jr, 1976   -  North-western Venezuela.
  • griseiventris (Salvadori, 1895)   -  North-central Brazil.
  • hypochraceus (Miranda Ribeiro, 1938)   -  South-western Brazil (upper Río Madeira in Rondônia).
  • obsoletus (Temminck, 1815)   -  South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina.
