Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical swamp forest, heavily degraded former forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize (B) (NB), Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala (B) (NB), Guyana, Honduras, Mexico (B) (NB), Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

  • major (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Eastern Venezuela to north-eastern Brazil.
  • robustus Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868   -  South-eastern Mexico, eastern Guatemala, Honduras.
  • percautus van Tyne, 1935   -  South-eastern Mexico, northern Guatemala, Belize.
  • fuscipennis Salvadori, 1895   -  Northern Nicaragua to western Panama.
  • castaneiceps Salvadori, 1895   -  South-western Costa Rica, western Panama.
  • brunneiventris Aldrich, 1937   -  South-central Panama.
  • saturatus Griscom, 1929   -  Eastern Panama, north-western Colombia.
  • latifrons Salvadori, 1895   -  South-western Colombia, western Ecuador.
  • zuliensis Osgood & Conover, 1922   -  North-eastern Colombia, northern Venezuela.
  • peruvianus Bonaparte, 1856   -  South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador to north-eastern Bolivia and extreme western Brazil.
  • serratus (von Spix, 1825)   -  North-western Brazil.
  • olivascens Conover, 1937   -  Amazonian Brazil.
