Mature broadleaf forest, regenerating forest and grassland.

Kapiti in New Zealand. Introduced to Red Mercury, Hen, Long Island, and to Tiritiri Matangi Island (New Zealand).

Habits
Flightless. Nocturnal.
Food
Invertebrates, but also fallen fruits and leaves.
Voice
Male has a high-pitched ascending whistle. Female, a lower and more tremulous, rolling churr.

Nest
In a burrow, in a hollow log or under dene vegetation.
Eggs (Guide)
1 -2; white; 110 x70 mm. Incubation: 65 - 70; by male. Eggs are laid 2 - 3 weeks apart.
