Subspecies
Megalaima oorti (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti), Chinese Barbet (Psilopogon faber) and Taiwan Barbet (Psilopogon nuchalis) following Collar (2006).

Related to Golden-throated Barbet (Psilopogon franklinii), with similar morphology and vocalizations, and both possibly connected also to Green-eared Barbet (Psilopogon faiostrictus). Also probably allied to Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus) and Moustached Barbet (Psilopogon incognitus) and to group that includes Yellow-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon henricii), Flame-fronted Barbet (Psilopogon armillaris) and Golden-naped Barbet (Psilopogon pulcherrimus), and has also been considered by some authors to be be close to Mountain Barbet (Psilopogon monticola). Very well-marked subspecies sini and faber could prove specifically distinct; nuchalis also sometimes thought possibly to be a distinct species, but tends to bridge differences between these two subspecies and nominate oorti and annamensis. Thus, all are considered better treated as subspecies of present species.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • nuchalis Gould, 1863   -  Taiwan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Taiwan Barbet (Psilopogon nuchalis).
  • sini (Stresemann, 1929)   -  Southern China (Guangxi). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chinese Barbet (Psilopogon faber).
  • faber (Swinhoe, 1870)   -  Southern China, Hainan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chinese Barbet (Psilopogon faber).
  • annamensis (Robinson and Kloss, 1919)   -  Southern and eastern Laos and Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Annam Barbet (Psilopogon annamensis).
  • oorti (S. Müller, 1835)   -  Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
