Indonesia, Malaysia.

Northern Borneo mountains, from Kinabalu and Trus Madi south to Mulu and Murud.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Closely related to Yellow-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon henricii) and Flame-fronted Barbet (Psilopogon armillaris), and all three have been considered conspecific or to form a superspecies and all appear also to be related to group that includes Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti), Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus) and Moustached Barbet (Psilopogon incognitus).

No subspecies.
