Habitat
Lowland primary evergreen forests, sporadically in tall secondary and logged forest, swamp forest and occasionally in cacao plantations. From sea-level - 975 m.
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Thailand (B).
Unknown to Singapore (E) (B).
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through illegal logging and land conversion, forest fires, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Closely related to Flame-fronted Barbet (Psilopogon armillaris) and Golden-naped Barbet (Psilopogon pulcherrimus), with which has sometimes been considered conspecific or to form a superspecies and all three likely also to be related to group including Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti), Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus) and Moustached Barbet (Psilopogon incognitus). Subspecies rather poorly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
henricii (Temminck, 1831) - Southern peninsular Thailand south to Sumatra.
