Sharpe, 1876

Habitat
Primary and secondary forests, heavily degraded forest, scrubby habitats and even gardens. From sea-level - 1,2500 m, but mainly below 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Philippines (B) (NB).

Panay, Guimaras and Negros, in west-central Philippines.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Voice
Song is a series of thin, high-pitched, sweet notes. Call is a thin 'seep' interspersed with harder 'tup tup' notes.

Subspecies
Dicaeum austral (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Red-striped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe) and Visayan Flowerpecker (Dicaeum haematostictum) following Brooks et al. (1992).

Forms a superspecies with Red-striped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe), and sometimes considered conspecific. Scarlet-collared Flowerpecker (Dicaeum retrocinctum) may possibly be a part of same superspecies, but differs in several characters.

Proposed subspecies whiteheadi (described from Mt Canloan, on Negros) considered not distinguishable from birds elsewhere in range.

No subspecies.
