Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Streaky-headed Seedeater (Crithagra gularis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• canicapilla (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1855)   -  Wc, central. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Streaky-headed Seedeater (Crithagra gularis).
• elgonensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1912)   -  Southern Chad, north-western Central African Republic, northern DRCongo, southern Sudan, northern Uganda and extreme western Kenya. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Streaky-headed Seedeater (Crithagra gularis).
• montanorum (Bannerman, 1923)   -  Eastern Nigeria to central Cameroon. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Streaky-headed Seedeater (Crithagra gularis).
