Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) [XC620987]
by Rod Cassidy from uMhlathuze Local Municipality (near Richards Bay), (South) Uthungulu DC, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (call)

Subspecies
Pogoniulus bilineatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) and White-chested Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus makawai) following Benson and Irwin (1965), although White-chested Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus makawai) is considered an aberrant form of Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) by Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993) and Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993). This is as a precaution pending resolution of its taxonomy.

Appears to be most closely related to Yellow-throated Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus subsulphureus) and the superspecies formed by Red-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus pusillus) and Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus chrysoconus). Possibly fairly close to Red-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus atroflavus). Yellow-rumped subspecies mfumbiri, leucolaimus and poensis have been thought to represent a separate species, Pogoniulus leucolaimus, but they intergrade with the three golden-rumped subspecies in eastern Zaire, Rwanda and Burundi. Also, vocal evidence suggests that leucolaimus is conspecific with Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus). In view of similarity and intergradation between these two groups, other described forms considered untenable. Thus, sharpei (southern Ghana), togoensis (Gambia to southern Nigeria) and nyansae (western shore L Victoria) regarded as synonymous with leucolaimus; urungenis (southern shore L Tanganyika) with mfumbiri; alius (central Kenya) with jacksoni; pallidus (Sokoke Forest) and conciliator (Uluguru Mts) with fischeri; and rovumensis (south-eastern Tanzania), deceptor (eastern Zimbabwe), riparium (southern Mozambique, north-eastern South Africa) and oreonesus (Malawi) with nominate bilineatus. In addition, single specimen from north-western Zambia originally described as separate species, White-chested Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus makawai), on basis of plumage differences and bigger bill, but now generally considered no more than aberrant individual of Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucolaimus (Verreaux, J & Verreaux, E, 1851)   -  Senegambia east to southern Cameroon, southern Central African Republic and western Uganda, south to northern Angola, and southern Zaire.
  • poensis (Alexander, 1908)   -  Highlands of Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
  • mfumbiri (Ogilvie-Grant, 1907)   -  South-western Uganda and eastern Zaire to western Burundi, western Tanzania and eastern and north-central Zambia.
  • jacksoni (Sharp, 1897)   -  Eastern Uganda and central Kenya south to eastern Burundi and northern Tanzania.
  • fischeri (Reichenow, 1880)   -  Coastal Kenya south to north-eastern Tanzania. Also Zanzibar, and Mafia I (off eastern Tanzania).
  • bilineatus (Sundevall, 1850)   -  Eastern Zambia and southern Tanzania south to eastern South Africa.
  • makawai Benson & Irwin, 1965   -  North-western Zambia.
