Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus chrysoconus), which it meets marginally in Ethiopia and South Africa with no apparent hybridization. Both also closely related to Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) and Yellow-throated Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus subsulphureus), and perhaps fairly close to Red-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus atroflavus). Populations to eastern and south of L Victoria formerly separated as subspecies eupterus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
uropygialis (Heuglin, 1862) - Eritrea and northern and central Ethiopia to northern Somalia.
affinis (Reichenow, 1879) - South-eastern Sudan, south-eastern Ethiopia and southern Somalia south to south-eastern Tanzania.
pusillus (Dumont, 1816) - Southern Mozambique and eastern South Africa.
