First Described (Guide)
(Temminck, 1824)

Habitat
Evergreen lowland primary and logged forest, flooded and peatswamp forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m. Also, occasionally in rubber plantations, fruiting trees in gardens and other developed areas with adjacent forest habitats.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B).

Vagrant to Singapore (E) (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest loss due to illegal logging and land conversion, forest fires, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Belongs to the group that also includes Brown-throated Barbet (Psilopogon corvinus), Gold-whiskered Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopogon), Red-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon rafflesii) and Black-banded Barbet (Psilopogon javensis). Forms described as aurantiifrons from peninsular Thailand and humii from Borneo now included within nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • mystacophanos (Temminck, 1824)   -  Southern Myanmar (south-central Tenasserim), south-western and peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia (except south), Sumatra and Borneo.
  • ampalus (Oberholser, 1912)   -  Batu Islands (off western Sumatra).
