Habitat
Primary lowland evergreen forest, tall secondary forest, poor-quality Dipterocarp slope forest and occasionally in rubber plantations. From sea-level - 800 m.

Range (Guide)

Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Singapore (B), Thailand (B).

Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand south to Singapore, eastern Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung, and Borneo.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest loss due to illegal logging and land conversion, forest fires, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Belongs to the group that also includes Brown-throated Barbet (Psilopogon corvinus), Gold-whiskered Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopogon), Red-throated Barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos) and Black-banded Barbet (Psilopogon javensis). Apparently related rather closely to Black-banded Barbet (Psilopogon javensis) and Gold-whiskered Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopogon). Birds from southern Myanmar and Malay Peninsula described as subspecies malayensis, those from Belitung I and Mendanau Is as billitonis and those from Borneo as borneensis, but no constant differences in plumage coloration or size sufficient to warrant subspecific recognition.
