Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp and hill forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B) (NB), Indonesia (B) (NB), Malaysia (B) (NB), Myanmar (B) (NB), Thailand (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Habits
Forages in the canopy.

Food
Large figs and berries, some insects.

Voice
A rapid 'tu-tu-tu-tu...' usually followed by a resonant, mellow 'tuu-tu-tu-toop' or 'tu-tup' of varying length. Often repeated endlessly.

Nest
In a hole excavated in an arboreal termites nest or a rotting tree-trunk.

Subspecies
Belongs to the group that also includes Brown-throated Barbet (Psilopogon corvinus), Red-throated Barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos), Red-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon rafflesii) and Black-banded Barbet (Psilopogon javensis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • laetus (Robinson and Kloss, 1918)   -  South-western Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia; probably also extreme southern Myanmar.
  • chrysopogon (Temminck, 1824)   -  Sumatra.
  • chrysopsis (Goffin, 1863)   -  Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Gold-faced Barbet (Psilopogon chrysopsis).


Similar Species
Red-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon rafflesii) and Red-throated Barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos) both of which are smaller and lack a large yellow malar area.
