Some authors include present species in a superspecies with Chestnut-bellied Partridge (Arborophila javanica) and Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus), and all three are sometimes considered conspecific. Others attribute morphological similarities to convergent evolution. Sometimes Sichuan Partridge (Arborophila rufipectus) or Red-breasted Partridge (Arborophila hyperythra), or both, also included in the superspecies. Subspecies campbelli sometimes considered to constitute separate species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

• campbelli (Robinson, 1904)   -  Mountains of Peninsular Malaysia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Partridge (Arborophila campbelli).
• rolli (Rothschild, 1909)   -  North-western Sumatra (Batak highlands). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tan-breasted Partridge (Arborophila rolli).
• sumatrana Ogilvie Grant, 1891   -  Mountains of central Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sumatran Partridge (Arborophila sumatrana).
• orientalis (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Mountains of eastern Java.
