Subspecies
Sometimes included in proposed superspecies formed by Chestnut-bellied Partridge (Arborophila javanica), Grey-breasted Partridge (Arborophila orientalis) and Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus). Subspecies erythrophrys has been considered to merit treatment as separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

hyperythra (Sharpe, 1879) - Mountains of north-central Borneo.
erythrophrys (Sharpe, 1890) - Mt Kinabalu, Sabah (north-eastern Borneo).
