Forms a superspecies with California Thrasher (Toxostoma redivivum), possibly also including Le Conte's Thrasher (Toxostoma lecontei). Subspecies intergrade.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • crissale Henry, 1858   -  South-western USA (south-western Utah south to south-eastern California and southern Arizona, also New Mexico and western Texas) south to north-central Mexico (south to west-central Coahuila).
  • trinitatis Grinnell, 1927   -  Valle de Trindad (north-eastern Baja California) in north-western Mexico.
  • dumosum Moore, RT, 1941   -  Central Mexico (eastern Durango and southern Coahuila south to Hidalgo).
