Proposed subspecies macmillanorum (San Joaquin Valley, in California) exhibits only minor plumage differences (e.g. crown darker, flanks lighter) from similarly sized nominate and considered better merged with latter.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• lecontei Lawrence, 1851   -  South-western USA (south-central and south-eastern California east to south-western Utah and south-central Arizona), south to north-western Mexico (north-eastern Baja California, north-western Sonora).
• arenicola (Anthony, 1897)   -  Western coast of central Baja California.
• macmillanorum Phillips, AR, 1966   -  Inland central California (southern San Joaquin Valley).
