A slow series of piping notes on one pitch, 'ho, ho, ho..' etc, but much shorter and in a more irregular series.

Subspecies
Glaucidium minutissimum (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Least Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium minutissimum) and Subtropical Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium parkeri) following SACC (2005), and Central American Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium griseiceps), Tamaulipas Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium sanchezi) and Colima Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium palmarum) following AOU (1998).

Considered member of Least Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium minutissimum) complex, which also includes Tamaulipas Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium sanchezi), Central American Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium griseiceps), Subtropical Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium parkeri) and Amazonian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium hardyi).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • oberholseri Nelson, 1901   -  Southern Sonora to southern Sinaloa (north-western Mexico).
  • palmarum Nelson, 1901   -  Nayarit to Oaxaca (central Mexico).
  • griscomi R. T. Moore, 1947   -  South-western Morelos and north-eastern Guerrero (central Mexico).
