Considered member of Least Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium minutissimum) complex, which also includes Colima Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium palmarum), Central American Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium griseiceps), Subtropical Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium parkeri) and Amazonian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium hardyi).
