Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Drab Whistler (Pachycephala griseonota), Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris), Black-headed Whistler (Pachycephala monacha) and Wallacean Whistler (Pachycephala arctitorquis). Sometimes regarded as conspecific with one more of them. White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra) hybridizes with Black-headed Whistler (Pachycephala monacha) on Sogeri Plateau and in R Angabunga area (from Bereina to Mafulu).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leucogastra Salvadori & D'Albertis, 1875 - Coastal south-eastern New Guinea from Hall Sound Seast to Port Moresby.
meeki Hartert, 1898 - Louisiade Archipelago (Rossel I), off south-eastern New Guinea.
