Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Drab Whistler (Pachycephala griseonota), Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris), White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra) and Wallacean Whistler (Pachycephala arctitorquis). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Rufous Whistler (Pachycephala rufiventris), White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra) and Wallacean Whistler (Pachycephala arctitorquis). In south-eastern New Guinea, hybridizes with White-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala leucogastra) on Sogeri Plateau and in R Angabunga area (from Bereina to Mafulu).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • monacha Gray, 1858   -  Aru Is, off south-western New Guinea.
  • lugubris Salvadori, 1881   -  Patchily in New Guinea mountains from Charles Louis Mts, mouth of R Mimika and R Utanata, Snow and Victor Emanuel Ranges, and northern base of Bewani Mts, R Puwani and Saruwaged Mts east to Owen Stanley Mts.
  • dorsalis Salvadori, 1878   -  Mountains of central and eastern New Guinea.
