Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, swamp forest, including partially logged forest, coastal swamp-forest bounded by heavily forested limestone. From sea-level - 300 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Biak I, off north-western New Guinea (Irian Jaya).
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss through logging and conversion to agriculture are the main threats.

Voice
Probably a harsh croak. Rasping at close range but sounding more like a deer's bark at long range.

Subspecies
Otus magicus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Flores Scops-Owl (Otus alfredi) following Widodo et al. (1999), Siau Scops-Owl (Otus siaoensis) following Lambert and Rasmussen (1998), Engano Scops-Owl (Otus enganensis) following Andrew (1992), Seychelles Scops-Owl (Otus insularis) and Papuan Scops-Owl (Otus beccarii) following Holt et al. (1999) and Moluccan Scops-Owl (Otus magicus).

Sometimes treated as conspecific with either Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis) or Moluccan Scops-Owl (Otus magicus). Song is similar to Moluccan Scops-Owl (Otus magicus), but significant differences from both in plumage.

No subspecies.
