Probably forms superspecies with Simeulue Scops-Owl (Otus umbra) and Nicobar Scops-Owl (Otus alius). Sometimes considered conspecific with Moluccan Scops-Owl (Otus magicus). Formerly treated as subspecies of Simeulue Scops-Owl (Otus umbra), Eurasian Scops-Owl (Otus scops) or Oriental Scops-Owl (Otus sunia). Seems closest to Simeulue Scops-Owl (Otus umbra), but separated specifically on basis primarily of vocal characteristics.
