Habitat
Basaltic lakes in the arid Patagonian steppes. Saline and bitter-salt lakes in the non-breeding season. From 500 - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Argentina (B), Chile (B).

Extreme south-western Argentina.

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Introduction of salmon and trout to private lakes on the Strobel plateau, fluctuating water levels and pollution are the main threats.

A floating mass of aquatic vegetation. In colonies.

Subspecies
Has hybridized with Silvery Grebe (Podiceps occipitalis).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Silvery Grebe (Podiceps occipitalis) which has less extensive white in the flanks. Its ear coverts are yellow and the front half of the face is grey rather than black. Lacks the peaked crown of Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi).
