Vagrant to Paraguay.

Hybridization with Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi) recorded. Subspecies juninensis may be distinct species, given morphological and ethological differences.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• juninensis von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894   -  Central Andes of Colombia to northern Chile, north-western Argentina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Silvery Grebe (Podiceps juninensis).
• occipitalis Garnot, 1826   -  Central and southern Chile, central and southern Argentina, Falkland Is. Winters in north of range.
