Subspecies
Bennett's Woodpecker (Campethera bennettii) and Reichenow's Woodpecker (Campethera scriptoricauda) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Campethera bennettii following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Forms a superspecies with Fine-spotted Woodpecker (Campethera punctuligera), Nubian Woodpecker (Campethera nubica) and Reichenow's Woodpecker (Campethera scriptoricauda). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Reichenow's Woodpecker (Campethera scriptoricauda), or with all three. Identity of birds in eastern Rwanda uncertain; they probably belong either to Nubian Woodpecker (Campethera nubica) or to nominate subspecies of Bennett's Woodpecker (Campethera bennettii).

Proposed subspecies uniamwesica (Angola east to L Victoria and south to central Zambia) synonymized with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • bennettii (Smith, 1836)   -  West-central Angola east to south-eastern Zaire and Rwanda, possibly also Uganda (Merama Hills), and to western and southern Tanzania, south to western Malawi, north-eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique; possibly this taxon in eastern Rwanda.
  • capricorni Strickland, 1853   -  Southern Angola, south-western Zambia, and adjacent northern Namibia and northern Botswana.
