Subspecies
Hybridizes with Ocellated Piculet (Picumnus dorbignyanus), also to limited extent with White-barred Piculet (Picumnus cirratus), and occasionally with Ochre-collared Piculet (Picumnus temminckii). Subspecies guttifer formerly considered a separate species, but appears to intergrade with nominate in western Mato Grosso. These mixed populations probably account for the form previously listed as subspecies corumbanus of White-wedged Piculet (Picumnus albosquamatus). Forms described as species "Picumnus asterias", known only from single type specimen, and "Picumnus sagittatus" are indistinguishable from variable subspecies guttifer, and are thus synonymized with it.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
guttifer Sundevall, 1866 - Eastern and central Brazil, from southern Pará and southern Maranhío south to southern and eastern Mato Grosso and western Sío Paulo.
albosquamatus d'Orbigny, 1840 - North-central and eastern Bolivia and south-western Brazil (in south-western Mato Grosso), and adjacent northern Paraguay.
