Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Ocellated Piculet (Picumnus dorbignyanus) and Ochre-collared Piculet (Picumnus temminckii), and sometimes treated as conspecific with one or the other, or both. Hybridizes frequently with Ochre-collared Piculet (Picumnus temminckii) in south-eastern Brazil (Sío Paulo and Paraná), also occasionally with Ocellated Piculet (Picumnus dorbignyanus) in Bolivia. Also interbreeds to limited extent with White-wedged Piculet (Picumnus albosquamatus) and apparently with Varzea Piculet (Picumnus varzeae). South-western subspecies thamnophiloides, tucumanus and pilcomayensis intergrade in northern Argentina, and sometimes considered together to form a separate species, but last of those also intergrades with nominate subspecies in eastern Paraguay. Also, northern subspecies confusus and macconnelli possibly form a distinct species. Further study needed to clarify relationships of this entire complex of taxa.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • confusus Kinnear, 1927   -  South-western Guyana, extreme northern Brazil (eastern Roraima) and French Guiana.
  • macconnelli Sharpe, 1901   -  Eastern Amazon region of north-eastern Brazil (west to lower R Tapajós).
  • thamnophiloides Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1942   -  South-eastern Bolivia (Chuquisaca) southern along Andes to north-western Argentina (northern Salta).
  • tucumanus Hartert, 1909   -  Northern Argentina (western Salta south to La Rioja).
  • pilcomayensis Hargitt, 1891   -  South-eastern Bolivia (southern Santa Cruz, eastern Tarija) and Paraguay south to northern Argentina (south to Santiago del Estero, northern Buenos Aires and northern Corrientes).
  • cirratus Temminck, 1825   -  South-eastern Brazil (from northern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo south to Paraná), southern Mato Grosso and eastern Paraguay.
