Tanzania Masked-Weaver (Ploceus reichardi) and Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include ruweti as a subspecies of Tanzania Masked-Weaver (Ploceus reichardi).

Has been thought to form a superspecies, or even to be conspecific, with Southern Masked-Weaver (Ploceus velatus), Vitelline Masked Weaver (Ploceus vitellinus), Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti) and Katanga Masked-Weaver (Ploceus katangae), but molecular data suggest that it is close only to Katanga Masked-Weaver (Ploceus katangae).
