Subspecies
Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer), Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei), Stuhlmann's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) and Montane Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris ludovicensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Nectarinia afra following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with Stuhlmann's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) and Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei) and sometimes treated as conspecific with one or other of those. Has been considered conspecific also with Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer), and is closely related to Golden-winged Sunbird (Drepanorhynchus reichenowi). Subspecies geographically isolated from each other, possibly represent separate species. Further, an as yet undescribed taxon, apparently close to subspecies whytei, occurs in north-eastern Zambia and Tanzania (where fairly common at some localities in Eastern Arc mountains at forest edges and towards rainshadow north-west of mountains). This may belong with this species or Miombo Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris manoensis), or represent a distinct species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • ludovicensis (Bocage, 1868)   -  Highlands of western Angola.
  • whytei Benson, 1948   -  Northern Malawi (Nyika Plateau) and adjacent parts of Zambia.
