Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-headed Apalis (Apalis melanocephala). Racial identity of recently recorded northern Mozambique (Mt Chiperoni) population uncertain, tentatively included in nominate subspecies. Further study is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
vumbae Roberts, 1936 - Eastern highlands of Zimbabwe (Nyanga south to Bvumba).
chirindensis Shelley, 1906 - Eastern highlands of Zimbabwe (south of Bvumba) and adjacent Mozambique, including Mt Gorongoza and Mt Chiperoni.
