Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chirinda Apalis (Apalis chirindensis).

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigrodorsalis Granvik, 1923   -  Central Kenya Highlands.
  • melanocephala (Fischer & Reichenow, 1884)   -  Southern Somalia, coastal Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania (including eastern Usambara Mts).
  • moschi van Someren, 1931   -  South-eastern Kenya (Taita Hills) and Tanzanian highlands (south to Udzun­gwa Mts).
  • muhuluensis Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1947   -  South-eastern Tanzania.
  • tenebricosa Vincent, 1933   -  Northern Mozambique (Njesi Plateau, Mt Namuli and Mt Chiperoni).
  • adjacens Clancey, 1969   -  Eastern Malawi highlands (except Mulanje and Thyolo).
  • fuliginosa Vincent, 1933   -  Mt Mulanje and Mt Thyolo, in south-eastern Malawi.
  • lightoni Roberts, 1938   -  Central Mozambique and adjacent eastern Zimbabwe.
  • addenda Clancey, 1968   -  Southern Mozambique (south of R Save, including Bazaruto I).
