Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Olive Long-tailed Cuckoo (Cercococcyx olivinus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- montanus Chapin, 1928 - Montane forests of east-central Africa from Ruwenzori to L Tanganyika.
- patulus Friedmann, 1928 - Kenya to southern Zaire, Zambia, eastern and southern Tanzania, Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
