Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 500 m.

Range (Guide)

Vanuatu (B) (NB).

Islands of northern Vanuatu.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NR
Habitat destruction from logging and clearance for gardens are the main threats. Trapping for trade appears to be on the increase.

Habits
Singles, pairs or small groups feed on figs in the forest canopy.

Food
Figs.

Voice
A single 'tzee', given at long intervals when feeding. High thin contact calls. A trilling song.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Red-headed Parrotfinch (Erythrura cyaneovirens).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

regia (Sclater, 1881) - Northern Vanuatu, including Banks Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Royal Parrotfinch (Erythrura regia). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Red-headed Parrotfinch (Erythrura cyaneovirens).
efatensis Mayr, 1931 - Efate (Vanuatu).
serena (Sclater, PL, 1881) - Efat� and Anatom (Aneitym), in southern Vanuatu. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Red-headed Parrotfinch (Erythrura cyaneovirens).

Similar Species
Blue-faced Parrotfinch (Erythrura trichroa) which occupies a different habitat (grassland) and has blue face and red tail but is otherwise uniform grass-green.
