Probably forms superspecies with Scaly-breasted Partridge (Arborophila chloropus) and Chestnut-necklaced Partridge (Arborophila charltonii). Has been considered a subspecies of Chestnut-necklaced Partridge (Arborophila charltonii).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Scaly-breasted Partridge (Arborophila chloropus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• merlini (Delacour & Jabouille, 1924)   -  Interior of central Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Scaly-breasted Partridge (Arborophila chloropus).
• vivida (Delacour, 1926)   -  Coastal hills of central Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Scaly-breasted Partridge (Arborophila chloropus).
