Subspecies
Celeus spectabilis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis) and Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Celeus obrieni) following SACC (2005).

Isolated subspecies obrieni, known from only single, female specimen, differs significantly in plumage, and data on habitat indicate major distinction from other subspecies. Possibly a separate species, but no further information available.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

spectabilis Sclater & Salvin, 1880 - Eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru.
exsul Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1941 - South-eastern Peru, extreme western Brazil (western Acre) and northern Bolivia (Beni, northern Cochabamba).
obrieni Short, 1973 - Eastern Brazil (western Piau�). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Celeus obrieni).
