Subspecies
Slate-colored Grosbeak (Saltator grossus) and Black-throated Grosbeak (Saltator fuliginosus) were formerly placed in the genus Pitylus but are here moved to Saltator following AOU (even though Black-throated Grosbeak (Saltator fuliginosus) is a South American species, occuring outside the AOU region).
Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Black-throated Grosbeak (Saltator fuliginosus), and both sometimes placed in a separate genus, Pitylus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
saturatus (Todd, 1922) - Eastern Honduras, Nicaragua, Caribbean slope of Costa Rica, Panama (Caribbean slope, and eastern from Veraguas on Pacific slope), north-western Colombia (west of Andes) and western Ecuador (south to western Loja and El Oro).
grossus (Linnaeus, 1766) - South-eastern Colombia east of Andes (southern from Vichada), southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), the Guianas, northern Brazil (south to northern Mato Grosso and Maranhío), eastern Ecuador (Sucumbíos south to Zamora-Chinchipe), eastern Peru and northern Bolivia (Bení and north-western Santa Cruz).
