Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, seasonally flooded grassland, dry savanna, inland wetlands, pastureland. From sea-level - 3,500 m.
Bolivia (NB), Brazil (B) (NB), Chile (B), Peru (NB), Uruguay (B).
Breeds in southern Brazil (Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, lowlands of northern and central Argentina (Santiago de Estero and Corrientes south to Chubut) and central Chile (southern Coquimbo south to Valdivia). Winters north to southern Peru (Cuzco and Puno), central and eastern Bolivia (La Paz, Beni and lowland Santa Cruz), central Brazil (Mato Grosso east to Bahia).

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Grassland Yellow-Finch (Sicalis luteola) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) and Misto Yellow-Finch (Sicalis luteiventris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Sicalis luteola following SACC (2005). Not recognised by BirdLife International.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Grassland Yellow-Finch (Sicalis luteola).
