Subspecies
Molecular data support placement as sister to Chestnut-rumped Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus pardalotus), to the exclusion of Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo). Considered conspecific with Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo) by most recent authors, but morphological and genetic differences support original treatment as a separate species. Subspecies napensis treated here within Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo), despite suggestion by some authors that it may be closer to Ocellated Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus ocellatus). Subspecies weddellii considered synonymous with nominate by most authors, but genetic and vocal data support treatment as a separate taxon. However, nomenclature complicated by fact that type specimens of the two were found to be identical when compared directly and, in addition, precise locality data are lacking for both. Range of lineatocapilla uncertain. The taxon is known only from unique type, said to be from Ciudad Bolívar, in central Venezuela, but that evidently erroneous. A thorough taxonomic review is badly needed for this poorly known species.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
lineatocapilla (von Berlepsch & Leverkühn, 1890) - Uncertain, but believed to be from somewhere along R Orinoco, in Venezuela.
weddellii (Des Murs, 1855) - North-western Amazonia, north of Amazon, in eastern and south-eastern Colombia (eastern Guainía, eastern Vaupés, southern Amazonas), extreme southern Venezuela (south-western Amazonas), north-eastern Peru and north-western Brazil (east to R Negro); may occur west to lowlands of eastern Ecuador.
perplexus Zimmer, JT, 1934 - Western Amazonia, south of Amazon, in north-eastern Peru (eastern from lower R Ucayali, possibly from R Huallaga) and western Brazil (eastern at least to R Tefé, probably to R Purús, and south to Acre).
ocellatus (Spix, 1824) - Patchily distributed in southern Amazonian Brazil, south of Amazon, from R Purús east to both banks of lower R Tocantins.
beauperthuysii (Pucheran & Lafresnaye, 1850) - North-western Amazonia (eastern Colombia to north-eastern Peru, southern Venezuela, north-western Brazil). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Line-crowned Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus beauperthuysii).
napensis Chapman, 1924 - Lower Andean slopes and adjacent Amazonian lowlands from southern Colombia (south-eastern Nariño, western Caquetá) south to north-eastern Peru (south to R Marañón). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo).
chunchotambo (von Tschudi, 1844) - Lower Andean slopes in eastern and north-eastern Peru (south of R Marañón to Ucayali and Junín). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo).
brevirostris Zimmer, JT, 1934 - Arid interior of north-eastern Brazil (western Bahia). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Lesser Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus fuscus). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Tschudi's Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo).
