Subspecies
Although its unusual plumage pattern suggests no close relatives, voice is similar to that of many congeners. Roraiman Barbtail (Roraimia adusta) was at one time mistakenly considered to be a subspecies of Stripe-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis cinnamomea).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • cinnamomea Lafresnaye, 1843   -  Extreme north-western Venezuela (Perijá Mts) and eastern Andes of Colombia (Magdalena, Santander south to Cundinamarca).
  • aveledoi Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1946   -  Western Venezuela (Falcón, western and southern Lara to northern Táchira) and Andes of northern Colombia (Norte de Santander).
  • bolivari Hartert, 1917   -  Coastal range of north-central Venezuela (Yaracuy east to Miranda and northern Guárico).
  • striatipectus Chapman, 1899   -  North-eastern Venezuela (western Sucre, Anzoátegui).
  • pariae Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949   -  Paria Peninsula (Cerro Humo, Cerro Azul), in north-eastern Venezuela.
  • carri Chapman, 1895   -  Trinidad.
  • terrestris Jardine, 1847   -  Tobago.
