Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus ) and Western Slaty-Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha ) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus ), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus ), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni ) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus ) following SACC (2005).
Formerly considered conspecific with Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus ), Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus ), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus ), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni ) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus ), but now thought not to belong in this group. Described form subcinereus (northern Colombia) is regarded as a clinal variant of nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
atrinucha Salvin & Godman, 1892 - Caribbean slope from southern Belize and north-eastern Guatemala south to northern Colombia (including Magdalena Valley) and north-western Venezuela (east to Trujillo, eastern side of L Maracaibo), and Pacific slope in north-western Costa Rica and from central Panama (Coclé) south to extreme north-western Peru (Tumbes).
