Subspecies
Picoides stricklandi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Strickland's Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus stricklandi) and Arizona Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus arizonae) following AOU (2000).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Strickland's Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus stricklandi).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
arizonae (Hargitt, 1886) - South-western USA, western, northern Mexico.
fraterculus (Ridgway, 1887) - Southern Sinaloa and adjacent Durango south to Michoacán.
