Subspecies
Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer), Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei), Stuhlmann's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) and Montane Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris ludovicensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Nectarinia afra following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei) and Montane Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris ludovicensis) and sometimes treated as conspecific with Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei). Has been considered conspecific also with Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer), and is closely related to Golden-winged Sunbird (Drepanorhynchus reichenowi).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • stuhlmanni (Reichenow, 1893)   -  Rwenzori Mts, in north-eastern DRCongo and western Uganda.
  • chapini Prigogine, 1952   -  Mountains of eastern DRCongo from west of L Edward (Nord-Kivu District) south to north-west of L Tanganyika (Mt Kabobo, in Sud-Kivu).
  • graueri Neumann, 1908   -  Mountains southern and east of L Edward (eastern DRCongo and south-western Uganda) south to northern tip of L Kivu (Virunga Volcanoes and north-western Rwanda above 1800 m).
  • schubotzi Reichenow, 1908   -  Mountains of Nyungwe Forest, in south-western Rwanda (southern L Kivu), and western Burundi (mountains north-east of Bujumbura).
