Nectarinia pembae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Pemba Sunbird (Cinnyris pembae) and Violet-breasted Sunbird (Cinnyris chalcomelas) following Archer and Turner (1993).

Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with Violet-breasted Sunbird (Cinnyris chalcomelas), and often considered conspecific. Also, a possible relationship with Long-billed Sunbird (Cinnyris notatus) has been proposed.
