Nest
Small domed purse made from leaves or dry grasses and silk from an insect's nest, with an entrance hole near the top, suspended from bracken, a shrub or tree at varying heights.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Loveridge's Sunbird (Cinnyris loveridgei) and Moreau's Sunbird (Cinnyris moreaui) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include moreaui as a subspecies of Loveridge's Sunbird (Cinnyris loveridgei).

May form a superspecies with Eastern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris mediocris) and Loveridge's Sunbird (Cinnyris loveridgei). Former suspicion that this species may be a hybrid between those two is not borne out by recent DNA analyses, which strongly indicate its validity as a full species and suggest that it is sister to Loveridge's Sunbird (Cinnyris loveridgei).

Similar Species
Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer) and Eastern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris mediocris) have greater extent of red on breast, lack bright yellow on sides of breast.
