Subspecies
Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops) and Sharpe's Pied-Babbler (Turdoides sharpei) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include sharpei as a subspecies of Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops).

May form a superspecies with Scaly Babbler (Turdoides squamulata) and Northern Pied-Babbler (Turdoides hypoleuca), possibly including also Hinde's Babbler (Turdoides hindei). Alternatively suggested as part of a superspecies with Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops), White-rumped Babbler (Turdoides leucopygia) and Angola Babbler (Turdoides hartlaubii). Often treated as conspecific with Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops).

Proposed subspecies clamosus (Rift Valley in Kenya) merged with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • sharpei (Reichenow, 1891)   -  Extreme eastern DRCongo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda (except north), south-western Kenya and north-western and western Tanzania.
  • vepres Meinertzhagen, R, 1937   -  Nanyuki area, on slopes of Mt Kenya (central Kenya).
