Subspecies
Zoothera piaggiae and Z. tanganjicae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include tanganjicae as a subspecies of Abyssinian Ground-Thrush (Geokichla piaggiae).
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
hadii Macdonald, 1940 - Southern Sudan (Imatong and Dongotona Mts).
piaggiae (Bouvier, 1877) - South-eastern Sudan (Boma Hills) and Ethiopia south to eastern DRCongo and northern and western Kenya.
ruwenzorii (Prigogine, 1984) - Ruwenzori Mts (western Uganda). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ruwenzori Ground-thrush (Zoothera ruwenzorii).
tanganjicae Sassi, 1914 - Eastern DRCongo, south-western Uganda, Rwanda and northern Burundi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kivu Ground-thrush (Zoothera tanganjicae).
kilimensis Neumann, 1900 - Central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
rowei Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1937 - Northern Tanzania.
